                        Beginning Cello Books

Finger Exercises for the Cello, Book One
Beginning cello books are all in first position. The books are written for complete beginners (Learning the Cello, The Open-String Book for Cello), and those with a general knowledge of the cello and first position (Beginning Technique for the Cello, Knowing the Notes for Cello). Beginning books can also be used by intermediate students to solidify their technique (Finger Exercises for the Cello, Book One).

                        Early-Intermediate Cello Books

The Two Octaves Book for Cello
Early-intermediate cello books teach and use the first four positions. For students who are just beginning shifting, books such as Fourth Position for the Cello, and Second Position for the Cello may be useful. For students with a rudimentary knowledge of shifting, books such as The Two Octaves Book for Cello and Finger Exercises for the Cello, Book Two can strengthen technique.

                        Late-Intermediate Cello Books

                        Tenor Clef for the Cello
Late-intermediate cello books teach techniques that are based on a general knowledge of the first four positions. Books such as Fifth Position for the Cello and Tenor Clef for the Cello address specific difficulties, while books such as Arpeggio Studies in Two Octaves for the Cello and Finger Exercises for the Cello, Book Three address more general technique.

                        Early-Advanced Cello Books

Arpeggio Studies in Three Octaves for Cello
Early-advanced cello books include the introduction of the thumb position (Thumb Position for the Cello, Book One and Octaves for the Cello, Book One), and continued work in the higher positions (Three-Octave Scales for the Cello and Arpeggio Studies in Three Octaves for the Cello).

                        Late-Advanced Cello Books

Thumb Position Studies for the Cello, Book One
Late-advanced books deal with the most difficult aspects of cello playing (Tenths for the Cello, Book One, and Artificial Harmonics for the Cello, Book One), while giving the advanced cellist daily work to train their hands (Extreme Training for Advanced Cellists, Book One, Warm-Ups for the Advanced Cellist, and Thumb Position Studies for the Cello, Book One).
